Sleepers beware: the “Daylight Saving Time” nonsense is back!

daylight-saving-bs.jpgAlmost forgot about it.

In my part of the world the folly starts a bit later, but many friends around the world have to get ready for the annual assault on their biological rhythms and their feelings about right and wrong.

If coffee really helps?

Found this funny article:

Caffeine called remedy for Daylight Savings Time

Coffee — it’s not just for breakfast anymore.

The director of the University of Iowa’s Sleep Disorder Clinic says this weekend’s change to Daylight Saving Time will likely mean a boost in fender benders — and worse.

Dr. Eric Dyken recommends a strong cuppa’ Joe late in the afternoon all next week if you find you’re getting sleepy sooner.

Dyken says, “The initial period, whether it’s spring of fall, that one-week period following the change, there’s usually an increase in traffic-related fatalities, especially in pedestrians being hit by cars around 6 o’clock P.M. when people are getting back from work because they’re tired.”

Everyone reacts differently to the twice-a-year “Spring Forward, Fall Back” ritual. He says some people readjust to the change within 24 hours, while others need a full week. He says Iowans need to recognize the time change -can- have an impact on their bodies.

“Be aware that you might be at risk for making a fatigue or sleepy-related accident doing something difficult,” Dyken says. “Around 5 or 6 in the afternoon when you’re driving home, be extra cautious, just common sense.” He says he’s usually prone to recommend more holistic solutions, however, he says some Iowans might want to resort to more traditional alternatives to keep themselves alert over the next week.

“There is something to a good caffeinated beverage,” Dyken says. “A Red Bull has 80 milligrams of caffeine in it. A good strong cup of coffee, maybe 120 milligrams of caffeine. It takes about 30 minutes for that caffeine to get into the system once you ingest it.” He says studies find the use of Daylight Saving Time helps conserve energy, saves money and actually reduces the number of traffic fatalities by 1%.

The best is the last sentence… “Studies find…” Indeed? Actually every study who’s patronage was not VERY obvious came to the same conclusion: DST saves nothing, but in return causes massive health problems, sleeping disorders, unnecessary suffering for people and animals. The total effect of DST is deep in the red – the money that goes into repairs of this nonsense and the loss of productivity by far exceeds the minimal energy savings (which are in the range of statistical aberrations, new studies actually suggest even a waste of energy due to more air conditioning…)

So what IS the use of DST? None. Or – almost none.

It is a practice, an exercise, a drill.

Old trick in military, brainwashing, magic orders. Do nonsensical things without asking. If your superior shows you a black book and tells you it is white, you have to actually SEE a white book, before you are allowed to the next level of “initiation”. If it is 10 in the morning (let alone that the true local time is different anyways), you have to believe without a doubt that it is 11 and act like it really is.

If you can be convinced to do those little nonsense drills (another great example: the useless “security” jokes at the airport – like someone recently wrote “fascism starts at the airport”…) without questioning or resistance, it is way more easy to feed you other crap. Like the wars for drugs and oil, err, “freedom and democrazy”, or the ongoing absurdities of that bloodsucking FED-based financial system…

Advice? Just ignore it, if possible. Follow your own rhythm that would be natural in your region. If there is sun, there is probably a day going on, so be awake. If it is dark, go to sleep mode. Sleep more in winter, sleep less in summer. Yes – it works that way. Your body and mind will thank you.
Yeah, difficult if you are caught in the rat race or live in one of those funny places they call “cities” or have to catch a plane and have to be 2 hrs early for the “security” checks… ;-)

As a freelancer and webworker I can afford to live according to the rhythms of nature and my body. Great thing – highly recommended. Just keep in mind most other folks out there are driven by the clock, not the sun, and might be an hour early during the next months…

BTW – not everywhere. About 130 countries/territories live happily without any “daylight saving”. Maybe there is more “light”…

Or, as an old Indian put it, when told the reason for daylight saving time:

Only a white man would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket and sew it to the bottom of a blanket and have a longer blanket.
